From September 17-18, 1965, over four hundred Montford Point Marines, representing seventeen states attended the reunion held at the Adelphia Hotel in downtown Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The overwhelming response led to the establishment of the Montford Point Marine Association, Inc. (MPMA) which was chartered in Philadelphia, sixteen (16) years after the closure of Montford Point Camp. Subsequent Chapters were immediately organized in more than eleven (11) additional cities. The National Montford Point Marine Association, Inc. is a nonprofit Veteran 501(c) (3) organization, established to perpetuate the legacy of the first African Americans who entered the United States Marine Corps from 1942 to 1949 at Montford Point Camp, New River, North Carolina. Membership in the Association is open to honorably discharged veterans and active members of all branches of the United States Armed Forces regardless of race, creed, or national origin.
